A lifecycle with unresolved outcomes
A provider may accept a request before a downstream outcome exists. Preserve the original status, reporting system, and event time. Keep pending and unknown outcomes separate from terminal results; do not label acceptance as delivery.
Worked incident: an event update is still queued
Illustrative situation: an invitation is pending near the event cutoff. First inspect its source status and age, the sender’s condition, and the documented error or queue information. Check whether the message is still useful before considering another attempt.
- Pause additional audience batches while the issue is assessed.
- Identify whether the outcome is pending, failed, expired, or genuinely unknown.
- Escalate with the message reference and status evidence, without sending unrelated recipient records.
- Check the event cutoff and current suppression state.
- Retry only when the provider’s method and original outcome support it; retain a link to the original attempt.
When another attempt is the wrong decision
If the original status is unknown, a new submission can produce duplicate messages. If the meeting has passed, the invitation no longer has its intended value. If a recipient has revoked permission, an earlier preparation decision does not authorize another attempt. Record the decision and its owner.
Delivery is not engagement
A delivery report is transport evidence from its source. It does not prove an observed open, persuasion, or attendance. Combine available records with clearly defined response and outcome measures instead of inventing a read rate.
Synthetic report · No customer data
A delivery snapshot you can interpret
One illustrative send: 1,000 attempted messages to 1,000 unique recipients. All figures below are invented to demonstrate reporting definitions. The snapshot uses one reporting window and one status per attempt.
- Delivered
- 850Provider delivery reports
- Failed
- 80Terminal failure events
- Expired
- 20Source expiry events
- Pending
- 30Unresolved queue statuses
- Unknown
- 20No usable terminal report
850 + 80 + 20 + 30 + 20 = 1,000. Pending and unknown remain visible. A delivered event does not prove an observed open.
