Animated GIF tradeoffs
Motion should support comprehension, not flashing or distraction. The first frame should still communicate a useful message when animation does not play.
Putting the guide into practice
Compare a static image with the animated version, check file weight, and reduce frames or dimensions when the intended program requires it. Preview the fallback frame on mobile.
- First frame
- Motion restraint
- File weight
- Static alternative
Limits and review decisions
Do not put essential instructions only in later frames. A recipient may see a thumbnail or a static first frame.
